With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head will collapse
But there’s nothing in it
And you’ll ask yourself
Where is my mind?

- The Pixies

I’ve woefully neglected this little corner of cyberspace, leaving all you (aka 4, max) readers in limbo. Following tales of killer cockroaches and the passing of beloved pets, I know you’ve been itching for updates. woo.

First. Boerne. It’s definitely been an adjustment having one less furry creature in the house. The entire weekend was spent anywhere but at home. I felt guilty leaving Skokie alone, but it was too depressing to be here and I’ve done enough crying. The vet now suspects Boerne had cancer in his central nervous system, which would explain his balance problems and unusually high sodium levels a few months back. Who knows. As for Skokie - other than becoming very clingy and whiney, he seems to be coping well. He does have a heightened interest in catnip these days, and spends most of the evenings completely stoned. Ah, the wonders of self-medication.

I do have to say - there’s definitely a significant decrease in the amount of cat hair around here. Boerne, bless his heart, shed like a mutherfucker. I’m enjoying less vaccuuming and lint-hair-roller time.

Other things in my head:

  • Books. Finally gotten around to reading David Sedaris. In typical ADD fashion, I’m reading two books: “Holidays on Ice,” and “Me Talk Pretty One Day.” Good reading.
  • Movies. Saw Nobody Knows….a Japanese drama about 4 kids abandoned by their mom in 1988 in Tokyo, based on a true story. Beautifully shot and powerful in its subtlety….but also really, really long. At 141 minutes, it rates high on the Numb Ass scale.
  • The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Can’t wait.
  • I hung a birdfeeder on my patio, and am now obsessed with the number and types of birds that visit. I even launched a mini marketing campaign to entice more birds to the feeder by sprinkling tons of birdseed all over the patio wall, in the garden and on the rocks bordering the unit. I expect to receive a letter from the condo association citing me for excessive seed spewage.
  • Attended two excellent wine tastings. After much swirling/sniffing/sipping, I really enjoyed rieslings, syrrahs, pinots and muscats. Funny, I never enjoyed wine before.
  • Speaking of wines, still lovin’ the sake. Finished off a bottle tonite. Yum.
  • Doing the Run for the Rose 5K this weekend at Reliant Stadium. Though, my running routine’s been awful lately - haven’t been able to get past 3.5 miles and I can’t figure it out. I’m blaming the heat - 90 minute runs in cold weather were no problem. These days, anything over 30 minutes is torture.
  • Volunteered at an excellent art opening at DiverseWorks. One of my favorite pieces was titled ‘The War President‘ - a photomosaic of Prez Bush made of photos of US soldiers killed in Iraq. Amazing. In fact, every piece in the exhibit is excellent. Except for the one with the LIVE madagascar hissing cockroaches. That’s just fucking wrong. If you’re in Houston, go see the show. Really.
  • And lastly, I’ve been meaning to move this blog over to Wordpress but I’ve been too busy (aka lazy/procrastinating/etc). It’ll happen.
