of random thoughts and pickled cabbage
Am going to spend the rest of tonight in north Houston, so I’ll post my blog updates tomorrow night instead of tonight. I’ve also stopped following the media. In the meantime, some can’t-wait-till-tomorrow thoughts:
- Yesterday at the arena, someone mentioned that Bush is visiting the Astrodome on Monday. No one cared.
- They set up a makeshirt nursery in the middle of the entranceway, next to medical triage area. The nursery was filled with toddlers napping under colorful blankets, volunteers playing with happily squealing kids or rocking infants to sleep, physicians walking around checking on babies and passing out pedialyte, diapers and toys being delivered by the pallet. The kids had made finger paintings at some point, and their pictures were hung on the steel barricades enclosing the nursery. If you didn’t know any better, you could have mistaken the nursery for your typical out-of-control kindergarten classroom.
- Where is the media? Why aren’t they covering stories like the nursery on the news? Or all those doctors and nurses busting their asses all day long? Granted I haven’t been to the actual Astrodome yet, but the only time I’ve actually seen any sign of the media are their trucks parked outside.
- Verizon, Southwestern Bell and Yahoo! Dsl brought in phone booths and mobile trucks, offering free phone calls to evacuees.
- The media is talking about a “free market” along Kirby, the street that runs along one side of the Astrodome/Reliant area. People with pickups overflowing with food and clothes have parked on the side of the road, distributing items to evacuees. It’s one of those things that will be burned in my memory. The goodness of people overwhelms me.

Cheers to you and your wonderful efforts for the evacuees.
I dropped off a trunkload of stuff to the folks on Kirby on Thursday and I’ve never seen such grateful people. It’s the least we can do for them.
Keep up the terrific work!
Where are the media? Well, I can vouch that channel 11 has done several stories from inside the Dome and GRB.. from the doctors working in the makeshift clinics there to the volunteers doing intake to talking with people who are looking for loved ones and airing their messages….
It’s a pretty awesome sight out there. From one “do gooder” to another, thanks for helping our guests feel at home.
