- This was not a fun run. Well, the first hour was great….wonderful, in fact. My legs felt super light, my breathing steady. “Hey - this might be an easy run after all,” I told myself. Ha.
- At the 90 minute mark, I was dying. The arch in my right foot was killing me. And, I had tied my left shoe too tight so the “mouth” of the shoe was pressing tightly against my now swollen feet, causing quite a bit of pain. I tried ignoring it - and the two blisters forming on my right arch and left toe - but eventually had to stop to adjust the shoe.
- Today’s run was so difficult that I seriously started doubting whether I’d be able to run the full Marathon. I started contemplating how I could switch to the Half Marathon….I’d change my Marathon registration, switch to a new running schedule, come up with a good explanation to tell people…..but by the time I had mapped these out in my head, I was within sight of the finish and suddenly felt a surge of energy.
- There’s nothing wrong with the Half Marathon - but for me, running the 26.2 miles is a personal challenge I really need to put myself through. It goes to show that the training runs during the week are really important for me, both physically and psychologically.
- I am a new fan of Amino Vital. Even though it tastes like ass.

Way to gut it out Jen!! I know you can do it. I’ll be there at the 21.5 mile mark to cheer you on.
You are almost at the half distance already. My left and right brain always have a debate during all my runs. One side tries to quit and comes up with wonderful excuses while the other side comes up with visions of greatness and forces the body to perform.
Jen,
The runs now in the Houston summer gloom are MUCH tougher than the longer ones once the weather turns. You are in the toughest part of training for the Houston Marathon. Hang in there!
Steve
Jen,
I had an experienced runner remind me today out at the Bearkat Bash that the cooler weather allows you to train harder and longer. And I really believe that when I look at the miles that I did between the Marine Corps and Houston Marathons and how it paid off for me (43-minute drop).
This heat sucks, but I think it will make you better in the long run.
Jon
You know, I feel the same way regarding the half versus the full…
you’ll make it. and next year we can run the full together!
