of random thoughts and pickled cabbage

I took a few more [crappy] pictures with my cameraphone over the weekend, and they’ll serve as my latest update entry as I don’t have the energy to write it all out. I’m planning to go back later this week, but the weekend wore me out.
On a personal note, I went down to Freeport (right on the Gulf) to collect some fish for someone’s new aquarium. Lotsa fun was had. Must repeat.
This first picture was taken at 7:30am on Saturday morning, as I was drove into the Astrodome/Reliant areas.

By MICHAEL GRACZYK, Associated Press WriterMon Sep 5, 3:56 PM ET
Thousands of Vietnamese settled in the familiar climate of the Gulf Coast region after the upheaval of two wars in their homeland. Hurricane Katrina uprooted them again the third mass evacuation in a collective memory of loss.

Am going to spend the rest of tonight in north Houston, so I’ll post my blog updates tomorrow night instead of tonight. I’ve also stopped following the media. In the meantime, some can’t-wait-till-tomorrow thoughts:
- Yesterday at the arena, someone mentioned that Bush is visiting the Astrodome on Monday. No one cared.

Just got home. Spent the day working with pediatric triage, collecting information on health symptoms in the babies/kids. Lots of rashes on the babies and toddlers from being in that nasty water. Parents were exhausted, and very worried about the effect of the water on their children. Lots of requests for immunizations for babies. Someone had brought stickers for the kids, so I stuck them on every toddler/kid that came through. One thing I learned today: children love stickers.
I jotted down some of my thoughts from today. I’ll clean them up and post them later.

I took a picture at the Astrodome today with my cameraphone, but originally decided not to post it. Something about it felt a little disrepectful. Voyeuristic. But, I just spent 20 minutes watching MSNBC’s coverage of the “anarchy” in New Orleans and the crowds that pose a “threat” to rescue efforts. It really pissed me off, so I’ve changed my mind about posting the picture.

The following is an excerpt of an email I sent out to friends about my day today at the Astrodome.

I drove past the Astrodome on my way home tonight. Buses, cars, media trucks. And people. Lots and lots of people. Everywhere. The congestion here in the Med Center is reminiscent of the Superbowl...sans the festive atmosphere, of course.
