On Saturday, I had an early birthday dinner with some friends at Blue Nile, a yummy Ethiopian restaurant on Richmond. I hadn’t had Ethiopian since I moved back to Houston (I missed the Ethopian in NYC), so dinner was especially good.

My categories aren’t showing up correctly in the sidebar. Looks like something happened when I switched from the test to the live version of the site. hmmm….
Also, the Korean translator function in the sidebar has a small glitch. It does translate the page into Korean, but it also spits out a MySQL error code. Apparently it also has something to do with my cUrl libraries, although I have those installed. grr.

Welcome to the new & improved escapevelocity!
Whew! The migration from Blogger to Wordpress, and subsequent site redesign, is finally complete. There are still a few loose ends that need fixing, but otherwise escapevelocity is back in business.Â
escapevelocity is now powered by Wordpress 2.0.1. WP uses PHP and MySQL, which took me quite a few days to figure out. I’m still fumbling my way through the code, but I’m slowly getting the hang of it. This is probably the biggest difference between Blogger and WP - with Blogger, I hardly tinkered with the backend files because everything was set up through the website interface. The admin interface for Wordpress is pretty awesome, very intuitive and has far more options than the Blogger interface. Overall, Wordpress offers much more freedom and control over blog setup than Blogger.  But my favorite thing about Wordpress is that it operates under a public license, meaning there isn’t any one person or company that owns Wordpress. The code is publically available, and anyone in the world can program new enhancements, plugins, etc. Plus, it’s 100% free.Â
Wordpress 2.0.1 (not sure about earlier versions) has a nifty tool for importing content from other blogging tools into Wordpress. This worked relatively OK for me, though some posts lost their formatting in the transfer. For example, my Marathon race report is completely screwed up and I might have to reapply the formatting from scratch.Â
An overview of other changes:

I’m in the last stages of making the final move from Blogger to Wordpress. The site might unavailable for the next few hours. Since I know everyone’s favorite thing to do on a Friday at work is check on escapevelocity. heh.
In the meantime, check out fourfour’s review of this week’s Project Runway episode. If you don’t watch PR, you a) probably won’t appreciate the genius of his recaps, and b) really, really need to start watching the show.

Another reason it’s been quiet…..
Inspired by the fabulous Lunamania (wootwoot), escapevelocity is undergoing a major redesign. Yes, I know I’ve talked about updating this site in the past, but this time it’s really happening. I promise.
The new & improved escapevelocity will be launched on Friday.
PS: Wordpress rawks.

It’s been a bit quiet on the escapevelocity front.
Work’s been pretty crazy - but in a good way. I’ve been buried in data collection for a qualitative research study I’m coordinating, and running around meeting with participants to conduct 1 to 2 hour interviews. I don’t get to do as much qualitative research as I’d like, so the past few weeks have been refreshing and fun. I’m finishing out the interviews next week, and the next steps are transcribing the 20+ interviews, and then coding and analysis. More fun! Yay for being a research geek.
I also have a race report for the Med Center 5K to be posted soon.
