of random thoughts and pickled cabbage

I've just realized that this webpage hasn't been displaying correctly in Internet Explorer 6. The columns were all shifted right. Also, the sidebar widgets showing my mileage, workouts, links, etc aren't showing up. I think I've fixed it. hmm.

woohoo, I've finally gotten around to redoing escapevelocity…..and put an end to my 6+ month blogging hiatus. I've started SMART in preparation for the NY Marathon (eek), so it's time be a running blogger again (or blogging runner?)
That's it for now - I'm feeling rusty from all my non-blogging time. Also have to start logging my weekly runs, too.

Finally, my marathon race report is fixed and reposted. Migrating from Blogger to Wordpress screwed up the formatting of lots of posts - and that one in particular. Snippets of html got plugged into the code randomly, and there were all these unclosed tags so random sentences and paragraphs would be bolded, or italicized, or converted into a link (pointing nowhere, I might add). Anyways, it drove me crazy trying to fix it back in March, so I shoved it into my drafts folder and ignored it for three months. I had some unexpected free time today, so I decided to get the damn thing fixed.

After several weeks of ongoing frustration, my archive links are fixed thanks to the smarties at groovehouse.org and sketkar’s world. Thanks guys!

There are still some bugs I’m trying to work out, but haven’t had much luck. Most are related to Wordpress 2.0.1 plugins that are only compatible with earlier versions of WP, or just don’t play well with other code:
argh!

My categories aren’t showing up correctly in the sidebar. Looks like something happened when I switched from the test to the live version of the site. hmmm….
Also, the Korean translator function in the sidebar has a small glitch. It does translate the page into Korean, but it also spits out a MySQL error code. Apparently it also has something to do with my cUrl libraries, although I have those installed. grr.

Welcome to the new & improved escapevelocity!
Whew! The migration from Blogger to Wordpress, and subsequent site redesign, is finally complete. There are still a few loose ends that need fixing, but otherwise escapevelocity is back in business.
escapevelocity is now powered by Wordpress 2.0.1. WP uses PHP and MySQL, which took me quite a few days to figure out. I’m still fumbling my way through the code, but I’m slowly getting the hang of it. This is probably the biggest difference between Blogger and WP - with Blogger, I hardly tinkered with the backend files because everything was set up through the website interface. The admin interface for Wordpress is pretty awesome, very intuitive and has far more options than the Blogger interface. Overall, Wordpress offers much more freedom and control over blog setup than Blogger. But my favorite thing about Wordpress is that it operates under a public license, meaning there isn’t any one person or company that owns Wordpress. The code is publically available, and anyone in the world can program new enhancements, plugins, etc. Plus, it’s 100% free.
Wordpress 2.0.1 (not sure about earlier versions) has a nifty tool for importing content from other blogging tools into Wordpress. This worked relatively OK for me, though some posts lost their formatting in the transfer. For example, my Marathon race report is completely screwed up and I might have to reapply the formatting from scratch.
